Roy’s Redwoods

I ventured out to this preserve of old-growth California Redwoods in Marin County to draw and study the resiliency of these glorious trees.

 

The bark of mature redwood trees can grow at least a foot thick, creating a great protective shield from fires.

Coast redwoods contain tannin in their bark which does not burn easily – a natural flame retardant.
Hotter, dryer conditions mean redwoods can be killed more easily with flames getting into the upper reaches of trees.
Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world, which prevent most wildfires from spreading up into the tops of trees.
